Phil Everly (Jan. 19, 1939 ~ January 3, 2014) |
Phil Everly, one half of the brother vocal duo whose sibling harmonies sweetened 1960s rock music died in Burbank of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 74.
A generation of teens grew up with the high, clarion voices of The Everly Brothers blasting from car radios on:
WakeUp Little Susie, Bye Bye Love, Cathy's Clown and All Have To Do Is Dream …
Starting in the late 1950s, the brothers’ tight harmonies were unmistakable and unforgettable, profoundly influencing everyone from the Beatles to the Beach Boys to the Byrds, to Simon and Garfunklel and countless other rock, folk and country singers…
Check out Phil in this 1957 session with Clyde McPhatter, KJR DJ Dick Stokke and Frankie Lyman |
Bye Bye Love was the brothers’ breakthrough hit, in 1957, and their first million-seller;
followed up that same year with Wake Up Little Susie, a tune about two teenagers falling asleep at the drive-in theater and waking after curfew. Wake Up Little Susie, a NUMBER ONE hit, was banned in Boston for its slightly suggestive lyrics…
Rest In Peace Phil Everly…
