May 23, 1964: 

Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop",   already a hit in the UK, enters the Hot 100 where it will stay for 12 weeks, climbing to #2…It was the first International Hit in the SKA genre!




Six Million copies of this record were sold and was thereby instrumental in launching Island Records as a worldwide contender.






 


NOTE: The record's arrangement is credited to Ernest Ranglin, who also plays guitar on the recording. The saxophone solo from the original version  (Barbie Gaye, 1956) was replaced by a harmonica solo. Rod Stewart DID NOT play the harmonica solo, although he’d been given credit for doing so. Either Pete Hogman or Jimmy Powell, both of The Five Dimensions did the harmonica work on the tune.. Five Dimensions guitarist Kenny White maintains it was Pete Hogman, while Jimmy Powell asserts that it was he who played this solo…
