Barry was the Dovells’ lead singer
and then a solo artist in the 1960s…
In 2008 he wrote a book entitled
“Black Like Me”:
Barry began his career upon his discharge from military service when he returned home to Philadelphia and joined The Dovells as their lead singer. His is the lead voice on their best selling records including the classic
"Bristol Stomp"
(NOTE: "Bristol Stomp" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc…)
The Dovels also had hits with:
"Hully Gully Baby" and "You Can't Sit Down"
The Motor City’s Dave Edwards and his band THE LOOK did a very credible cover of YOU CAN'T SIT DOWN in the late 1970s and were still rockin’ it into the 21st Century…
As a predominately blue-eyed soul singer, Barry recorded two hits as a solo act in 1965 for Decca Records in the US and released by Brunswick Records in the UK: "1-2-3" (#2 Top 100) and "Like a Baby" (#27 Top 100)...
Both tunes made the Top Ten of the UK Singles Chart…
NOTE: 1-2-3 was actually a re-write of the Motown team Holland Dozier Holland’s
“Ask Any Girl” (Flip side of The Supremes’ Baby Love single)
The Motown Team did get writers' credit after taking Barry and co-writers John Medoa and David White to court…
Len Barry, love him or hate him...
He is a part of the
EVOLUTION OF ROCK ‘n ROLL…
