May 21, 1964: The Drifters' Rudy Lewis was found dead in his Harlem hotel room, where he’d been since the prior night…

     On May 21, 1964, when the Drifters were due to record

 ”Under The Boardwalk” 

 (which had been written for Rudy Lewis)…







 Lewis was found dead in his Harlem hotel room, where he’d been since the prior night…

Moore left, Lewis right

      Former lead vocalist Johnny Moore was brought back to perform lead vocals for the recording…

 The next day, the Drifters recorded 

 ”I Don't Want To Go On Without You” 

  which was led by Charlie Thomas in tribute to Lewis. Charlie Thomas was the one who closed Lewis' eyes when he was found dead…

      An autopsy was never performed and authorities ruled his death as a probable drug overdose…. However, close friends and family believe he died from a mixture of a drug overdose, asphyxiation and a heart attack…

Dying at the age of 27 made Lewis the sixth member of Club 27…

 Leiber and Stoller went on to produce and record numerous hits by the Coasters and other Atlantic artists such as the Drifters, Ben E. King and LaVern Baker …

The Clovers are an American rhythm & blues vocal group out of Washington, D.C. They became one of the biggest selling acts of the 1950s, including their top thirty US hit in 1959, the Leiber and Stoller song

 "Love Potion No. 9"…

The Clovers hit #1 on the R&B chart with "Fool, Fool, Fool"…

Check out the guitar player. That's Bill Harris and he's a CLOVER. This is one of the earliest inclusions of an exclusively instrumentalist as one of the member of the group...

Atlantic Records signed the group in February 1951…

The Clovers were immediately booked by the Shaw Artists agency to perform at the Apollo Theater in Harlem starting on the 15 February that year…^.

Their second recording session resulted in the release of "Fool, Fool, Fool" in August 1951 which by September had reached #1 on the R&B chart…

The rest, as they say, is history…
