January 16, 2007: Pookie Hudson, the lead singer and songwriter for the Doo Wop group, The Spaniels, died of complications from cancer of the thymus at the age of 72…

Dig this: Pookie and the Imperials with Sammy Strain doing the high work. Pookie had left the Spaniels during this period and Billy Taylor of the Castelles was brought in to do the lead of the group to rave reviews. When Pookie came back several years later he so liked Billy Taylor's voice that he kept Billy in the Spaniels…

One of my favorite Spaniels tunes wasn’t a ballad at all:
 Great Googley Moo...

 (co-penned by Pookie)…

R.I.P. Pookie

Nathaniel Mayer (February 10, 1944 – November 1, 2008)

Nathaniel Mayer (February 10, 1944 – November 1, 2008)
Nate was a rhythm & blues singer who started his career in the early 1960s at Fortune Records in Detroit. "Nay Dog" or "Nate," as he was also known, had a raw, highly energetic vocal style and wild stage show…

VILLAGE OF LOVE was released in 1962 on Fortune Records of Detroit when he was 18 years old!!! Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before this Motor City wild man  had a falling out and eventual parting with the label--and that was the last most of the world heard of him for the next thirty years. But he never really stopped performing, never for long anyway…
WHY DON’T YOU GIVE IT TO ME (2007 Recording with members of the Dirtbombs, Outrageous Cherry and the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach)…

When speaking of Nathaniel Mayer, all the superlatives in the world couldn’t define his sound as well as the following quote snatched off the internet courtesy of our French Comrades in soul destruction, translated brilliantly via the google search engine:

“…A truth killer for the tracks of dance: riff of guitar slicing, rhythmic savage who balances, a voice of screamer and perfect choruses in answer…”

There’s never been and never will there be, another Nathaniel Mayer. Mayer’s fractured soul was a perfect match for Jack and Devora Brown’s unique vision and the records he cut for their Detroit Fortune label - in their (tragically recently demolished) cramped studio on Third Avenue —which make up the entirety of his career on record—are the kind of otherworldly things so magical that they almost shouldn’t be talked about, just listened to--
R.I.P. Nate
