SCOTT MORGAN ~ Check It Out!

Scott Morgan’s Rationals

The Rationals did a fine cover of Otis Redding’s  RESPECT and were  just about rocketed into national prominence in the mid-sixties, but Aretha and the Atlantic Records promo machine yanked it away…Not to say that Aretha didn’t do a great R-E-S-P-E-C-T, but it did knock Scotty and the boys back several notches. Check out The Rationals’ version:
NOT BAD, huh?…

The Rationals: 1964-1970

Scott formed Guardian Angel in 1971: Jeff Jones- lead guitar AL Jacquez - lead vocals, rhythm  guitar, Dave Morgan - drums
Scott Morgan - lead vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica, Terry Trabandt  (R.I.P.) - bass, vocals

Scott formed Lightnin' in 1972…

Then, in 1974, Scott hooked up with Fred “Sonic” Smith and they formed the LEGENDARY   Sonic's Rendezvous Band:
Scott Morgan of the Rationals
Gary Rasmussen of the Up
Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5
Scott"Rock Action" Asheton of the Stooges
THE legendary Rock ‘n Roll outfit comprised of former members the most talented and powerful acts of its day--ended up releasing only a one-song single, City Slang,  during its six-year life span (well, there are a few bootlegs)…

Of course those who know about this amazing band REALLY KNOW! If you need to know more than you do, find and buy their music, or at least Google them…

City Slang

Getting There ( Is Half The Fun )

Scott Morgan Band(s): 1981-1984

- During the 1980s, Morgan formed the Scott Morgan Band, which occasionally played in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area. In 1988, his band released an album entitled "Rock Action," who were Scott Morgan (guitar and vocals) backed up by ex-Sonic's Rendezvous bassist Gary Rasmussen and ex-Stooges drummer Scott (aka "Rock Action") Asheton.

The trio later toured in America under the name Scotts Pirates, which also included singer Kathy Deschaine:

“Liner Notes” about Scott’s Pirates
from You Tube:

ROCK & ROLL'S UNSUNG HEROES #12 - If there has ever been a figure in rock history deserving of the term unsung hero, it's Scott Morgan. He's been making great music for almost 50 years now, yet is virtually unknown outside of a dedicated group of true believers. Some of the best material he ever released was on The Scott Morgan Band's album Rock Action. Highlights include both sides of the group's amazing single 16 With A Bullet/Detroit, plus Eagle Dance, Josie's Well, an updated rendition of Hijackin' Love which Scott had recorded previously with the group Lightnin', Heaven and Earth and this cut featuring the harmonies of Scott and Kathy Deschaine, and the kick-ass drumming of Scott "Rock Action" Asheton. This song more or less became the group's theme song, and because of it they changed their name a short time later to Scot's Pirates.

It was while Scott’s Pirates was still active that  Scott, along with Gary Rasmussen, also teamed up with Dennis Thompson and  Wayne Kramer of the MC5 and Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) under the name Dodge Main…

In 1998 Morgan teamed up with Swedish rock band The Hellacopters on their U.S tour which led to the Ep Scott Morgan and The Hellacopters

The Hellacopters - Slow Down (Take a Look)

This led to: The Hydromatics, formed by Morgan and Hellacopters frontman Nicke Andersson (a.k.a Nick Royale),

Tony Slug and Theo Brouwer of Amsterdam punk band Nitwitz. During a six week tour the band recorded a live CD before Andersson had to leave the band due to his commitments with his other band. He was soon replaced by Andy Frost and in 2001 the second album Powerglide was released

The Hydromatics
Getting There (Is Half the Fun)

In 2003 the group was disbanded.
Once again, in 2004, Scott teamed up with Nicke Andersson

to form what was initially called Soulmover

But later renamed The Solution…
The group recorded their debut album Communicate! in Sweden with an all-Swedish line up of musicians…
Communicate! was followed up with the record Will Not Be Televised in 2007
Well, Scott’s been a tad under the weather lately and there are a FEW benefits happening to help out with some medical expenses. Keep an eye and ear open as to when and where these might be happening—and be there if you can.
Check out this link right now (it’s ok, you can get back to this page after you do this!)
Scott’s given us a LOT, time to give back, y’all…

R.I.P. RON ASHETON ~ Ronald Frank Asheton (July 17, 1948 – January 6, 2009)

On January 6, 2009, Ron Asheton, the guitarist in the proto-punk band the Stooges, whose raw, animalistic playing laid the groundwork for the entire punk rock movement, was found dead in his Ann Arbor, Michigan home. He was 60. An autopsy is scheduled, but police don't suspect foul play or drug use. Alongside Iggy Pop, David Alexander and his brother Scott, Ron co-wrote such classics "I Wanna Be Your Dog," "No Fun" and "1969."
—That’s pretty much the gist of the announcement of Ron’s demise (in publications across the universe), and , although not nearly the whole story on the incredible individual who was Ronnie Asheton, it speaks volumes…

“Come on Ron, tell ‘em how I feel…”

After The Stooges imploded in 1974, Ron formed a new band, ultimately acquiring drummer Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson, bass player Jimmy Recca and keyboardist Scott Thurston.

Ron was named #60 in the Rolling Stone Magazine's list of "Top 100 Guitar Players of All Time"

Asheton went on to play guitar in little-known groups such as the New Order, Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival. "I wasn't very successful in my endeavors," Asheton said in 2007. "But I kept on playing. I never got a regular job. If I made $50 a night I was happy. That was big bread. And just getting along with being able to pay the rent and cat food — they were the most important things. Then comes alcohol and cigarettes."--Rolling Stone Magazine interview
Destroy All Monsters, featuring Ron Asheton and Niagra Detroit, was another of Ron's projects.
Although never achieving mainstream success, the band  earned some notoriety due to members of notable rock groups The Stooges (Ron and Scott Asheton), MC5 (Mike Davis), The Rationals (Scott Morgan), The Up (Gary Rasmussen), etc…

Although Destroy All Monsters never recorded a “proper album,”  Sonic Youth singer/guitarist Thurston Moore released a three compact disc compilation of the group's music in 1994

New Race was a punk/proto-punk super-group based in Sydney, Australia formed in April 1981.
New Race was a concept band featuring three members of Radio Birdman: Deniz Tek, Rob Younger, and Warwick Gilbert, along with their inspirational mentors: Ron Asheton of The Stooges,

and Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson of the MC5.

The Stooges were finally inducted into The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 2010

NOVEMBER 11 IN THE EVOLUTION OF ROCK AND ROLL

1936: James Lee Land is born in Jasper, Texas, USA. He will grow up to become R&B guitarist/singer Buddy Ace, aka The Silver Fox Of The Blues. Buddy Ace was in gospel groups at first (one contained Joe Tex) before going R & B in the early 50s. He played in Bobby Bland and Junior Parker's bands before he finally got a record contract with Duke/Peacock in 1955. Buddy Ace live in Berlin/germany Franz-Club (early 90's)

 On November 11, 1937
Sonny Boy Williamson (The First) recorded "Good Gal Blues" in a session at the Leland Hotel in Aurora, Illinois

During that same Leland Hotel session, Robert Lee McCoy (better known as Robert Nighthawk), with Sonny Boy Williamson I on harp,  recorded "Mean Black Cat"

On November 11, 1955 The Clovers recorded their classic "Devil or Angel" at Capitol Studios in NYC. That session also produced "Hey Doll Baby"--the sax heavy flip side of that signature hit:

A year later (November 11, 1956) when Billboard Magazine published the results of its annual Disk Jockey poll:
Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love" is named the most played R & B single

The most promising artist according to that DJ poll was Chuck Berry

The Billboard DJ poll named Fats Domino as the favorite R&B artist

And Elvis is named the most promising Country and Western artist

The same date (November 11, 1956) was the day that Billboard Magazine introduced "The Top 100" format, combining record sales with radio and jukebox play to arrive at the standings. The Four Aces has the distinction of having the first "Number One" with their tune "Love Is A Many Splendered Thing"

Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue" was released in the U.S. on November 11, 1957 and made it to #3, remaining on the chart for 16 weeks! (The tune also reached #6 in the UK)

Hank Ballard released his new dance tune "The Twist" on November 11, 1958-- Of course he never recieved credit for inventing The Twist...

Ballard's (original) "The Twist" was issued as the B side of "Teardrops on Your Letter"

"Teardrops" did reach #16 on the R & B Chart, but "The Twist" by Ballard wouldn't appear on the Billboard Pop Chart for another two years (after Chubby Checker's "The Twist" was a hit)
With a #10 hit ("Brown Eye Girl"), Van Morrison was interviewed by Dick Clark on November 11, 1967:

Although a staple on American "Oldies" radio to this day, the tune never charted in the UK

Early in 1982, Brother Marvin Gaye (R.I.P.) left Motown Records. By November 11, 1982 he'd released his masterpiece "Sexual Healing" -- His 13th and final #1on the Billboard R & B Chart, reaching #3 on the Pop Chart and #4 in the UK by the next year...

Bob B Soxx lead male singer Bobby Sheen passed away on November 11, 2000. I'm not gonna post their hit (Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah which did reach #8 in 1963) But I am going to post Michael Erlewine's video of THE RATIONALS doing the tune...
