Tropical Jon's EVOLUTION OF ROCK 'n ROLL...June 12, 1989: Former disc jockey Vivian Carter, co-founder with Jimmy Bracken (later her husband) of Vee-Jay Records (the label name formed from their initials) died following a stroke and complications from diabetes at the age of 69...

Vee-Jay was the largest black-owned label of the 1950s

FOUNDED VEE-JAY RECORDS

Over its 13-year lifespan had a talent roster that included:

The Spaniels,

the Dells,

Jimmy Reed,

Rosie & The Originals,

DETROIT’S PYRAMIDS,

DETROIT'S Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Who INVENTED THE TWIST and  went on to do most of their recording on King Label…

The El Dorados,
Betty Everett,
The “Duke of Earl” himself, Gene Chandler,
Jerry Butler,
The 4 Seasons,
AND, yes, The Beatles, whose FIRST U.S. releases were on Vee-Jay…

Due to some gambling debts, Vee-Jay went bankrupt in 1966…But that wasn’t the end of the label—Google Vee-Jay and learn the rest of the story…
