The Heartbeats
The Heartbeats were best known for their song "A Thousand Miles Away", which charted at #53 in the US Billboard listings in 1957. This show got a bit more mileage out of that single:
Originally called "The Hearts", they switched in 1955 when a female group by the same name scored a minor Billboard hit. They were signed shortly after James "Shep" Sheppard joined the group, and were shuffled between various production companies over the next few years. 1959 was the year of "The Heartbeat" split-up, and Sheppard later went on to start Shep and the Limelites…

They contracted with Old Town Records company in 1959 after the company's owner, Hy Weiss, overheard the group singing in a bathroom adjacent to his office in Harlem. Their debut single was 1959's "So Fine", written by Johnny Otis; the song was a hit in the U.S., reaching #3 on the Black Singles chart and #11 on the Billboard Hot 100
