September 5, 1964: The Animals had their only number one hit on Billboard's Hot 100, when "House of the Rising Sun" reached the top. The band would continue to turn out hits like "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Monterey" and "San Franciscan Nights" before splitting up at the end of the decade…
