July 10, 1961: "Tossin' and Turnin'" by 28 year old Bobby Lewis reaches the top of the Billboard chart for the first of a seven week run, one of the longest of the year...

Bobby Lewis

(Born February 17, 1933 or 1925, Indianapolis, Indiana)

Although Bobby Lewis’ year of birth is ambiguous (Bobby was raised in an orphanage and ran away from his foster home at the age of 14), it is known that he started his career working in carnivals until he joined the Leo Hines Orchestra (in Indianapolis) as a singer…

He also worked small clubs and theaters during the 1950s and even recorded a single on the Spotlight Label in the early 50s…

 “Mumbles Blues”

In late 1960, Bobby Lewis, still a relatively unknown entity, did manage to get a gig at The Apollo Theater...

During  that time in New York he scoped out other opportunities,  stopping by the small, independent  Beltone Records’ offices where he was offered a tune written by Ritchie Adams
 who was signed to Beltone…

Bobby recorded the tune “Tossin and Turnin” on Beltone…Sales of the tune were so strong that the label released its first album ever--a Bobby Lewis album!

A few months later Bobby had another Top Ten song, "One Track Mind", his only other major hit record…

Soon after that, Beltone went belly-up…

Later Bobby had very limited success on ABC-Paramount and was soon after consigned to Rock & Roll History, somewhat unfairly, as a one-hit wonder…

TOSSIN and TURNIN—Seven weeks at the top of the charts starting on July 10, 1961:

"Tossin' And Turnin'" was featured in the soundtrack for the 1978 film, Animal House.

 Skip and Flip,
and several others have had some success with cover versions of the BOBBY LEWIS tune…
